Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and House Speaker Dennis Hastert on Tuesday called for a congressional leak investigation into who told the news media about previously undisclosed U.S. interrogation centers abroad.Yes, instead of being outraged at the alarming notion that the CIA has secret prisons that likely violate domestic and international law they are upset that the truth has come to light because Frist & Hastert don't believe that people have a right to know. At least the EU is having an appropriate reaction-- they're calling for an investigation of the prisons themselves.
"If accurate, such an egregious disclosure could have long-term and far-reaching damaging and dangerous consequences, and will imperil our efforts to protect the American people and our homeland from terrorist attacks," Frist and Hastert said in a letter.
...
"What is the actual and potential damage done to the national security of the United States and our partners in the global war on terror?" the letter asked. "We will consider other changes to this mandate based on your recommendations."
May I be so bold as to suggest that it is not a coincidence that Bush and Cheney are advocating for the CIA's right to torture right now? We still don't know much about these secret CIA "black sites" except that they were established over 4 years ago, they've been completely out of the public eye, and that only Bush and a few higher ups in the military knew about their existence until last week. I can't imagine a more perfect example of their bastardy and corruption than this.
The only thing consistent about the GOP is their ability to amaze me. And we thought the Bush Administration had it bad two weeks ago, something tells me that the worse is yet to come-- and it might be far worse for America than we thought.
Update: Trent Lott says the leaker was a GOP senator because the story was too close to what Cheney said at a recent GOP-only meeting. I hope either the press or the Dems pressure Hastert and Frist to stand by their demand for an investigation!
