The Foley Scandal Seems Like a Blip Next to This

A war whose death toll has reached nearly 4 million is raging in which country? It certainly isn't Iraq (although, at the rate things are going, it could be in several more years). The answer is the Democratic Republic of Congo. The war that began in 1998 "officially" ended a few years ago, but violent clashes continue in much of the country.

CNN's Anderson Cooper is reporting from the Congo this week, and the network deserves a lot of credit for devoting coverage to something that most Americans know or care little about. Talk radio and much of the blogosphere (including Demagogue) have yammered on about the Foley-page scandal, but it seems quite insignificant when one considers the thousands of women and children who are being raped by marauding bands of militia in the Congo.

Over at the Coalition for Darfur blog, Eugene has posted these excerpts from a recent broadcast of "Anderson Cooper 360."
