Does Senator Lott Still Believe This?

In January 1998, right after President Clinton delivered his State of the Union address, Senator Trent Lott of Mississippi gave the GOP's response and outlined the Republican agenda:
"We're going to eliminate the IRS as we know it today. It is morally wrong for people to live in fear of any government agency."
If Senator Lott and other Republicans truly believe it is morally wrong for people to fear the IRS, then I suppose the Senator's office will release a statement at any moment assailing GOP Congressman Sam Johnson of Texas for trying to use the IRS as a political weapon to silence certain Americans.

On the other hand, it's possible that Lott simply left out a word in his original '98 remarks. Perhaps he meant to say that Republicans believe it is "morally wrong for rich people to live in fear" of the IRS.
