Not Surprising in a State That Elects Its Judges

Today's decision removing a Texas judge from presiding over the Tom DeLay trial is is yet another reason why judges should not be elected.

Of course, as much as Republicans bitched about the fact that the original judge had made dozens of contributions to Dems -- and they were right to urge the judge's removal -- are they able to see why electing judges in partisan contests creates a climate in which judges are more likely to behave like partisan creatures?

And is it only now (when DeLay's future is on the line) that they give a damn about whether such a system casts doubt on the ability of judges to render decisions fairly?
