Spain's first same-sex marriage was
celebrated yesterday, notwithstanding the vociferous protests of the Roman Catholic Church. Spain is of course a famously Catholic country, with well over 90% of the people
claiming to be Catholic. Which made me wonder about the four countries that have legalized same-same marriage nationwide. Besides Spain, there's Belgium (Catholic), the Netherlands (half Catholic, with a Catholic governing party), and Canada (not especially Catholic except for Quebec). And in the U.S., of course, the one state in which same-sex marriage is legal is the one whose politics are most famously dominated by Catholics.
What gives? It's not as if the Church has been unclear about the Catholic view on this question.
