Demagogue

Tom DeLay reveals how much fun it must be to have a God-complex, a persecution-complex and fanatical delusions of grandeur at the same time. This past Friday Tom DeLay spoke in front of a Family Research Council-sponsored conference:

"One thing that God has brought to us is Terri Schiavo, to help elevate the visibility of what is going on in America...This is exactly the issue that is going on in America, of attacks against the conservative movement, against me and against many others," Mr. DeLay said.

Mr. DeLay complained that "the other side" had figured out how "to defeat the conservative movement," by waging personal attacks, linking with liberal organizations and persuading the national news media to report the story. He charged that "the whole syndicate" was "a huge nationwide concerted effort to destroy everything we believe in."

It is so clear where this is all going now.

Yes, Tommy, Terri Schiavo is a personal gift to you from God. He actually gave her a heart attack 15 years ago to prepare her for her true calling-- to help you. God hopes that you can use her as part of your defense against all of your ethical violations allegations. With God's help, DeLay is praying that his personal, groundless attacks on Michael Schiavo's character, linking up with radical right-wing organizations, and successful manipulation of the media over her case, will show everyone that he is fundamentally ethical and beyond reproach. God just sets them up and you knock them down, right? (You just also must pray that nobody notices that what you are really doing is using a brain-dead woman as a political tool to shield yourself from losing your job.)

Conservatives like DeLay will never believe that their side is winning until America is a right-wing, fundamentalist Christian nation, almost entirely devoid of liberals, abortion, gays, atheists, feminists, and non-Christians. That means that until that happens, they themselves believe they are losers. I certainly won't argue with them.
